Payroll fraud, abuse bad for honest Texas employers and taxpayers

Texas is continuing to be a leader in recovering from the national recession with great strides in construction and growth. The state abounds with skilled workers of nearly every trade, particularly in the construction and energy industries. Unfortunately, when a region proves to lead in a particular field, related problems are bound to crop up. A recent study has highlighted problems with wage and hour disputes across the state of Texas, which hurt legitimate businesses and taxpayers.

Wal-Mart Black Friday protests fizzles

Black Friday is more than just a great day for shopping- for retailers, it is perhaps the most profitable day of the year. Knowing this, employees at the retail giant Wal-Mart chose this day to stage what they planned to be a nationwide protest against the company's business practices. Among their complaints were issues such as wage and hour complaints, concerns about retaliation and general calls for the support of worker's rights. However, despite heavy media attention leading up to the proposed strike, few workers turned up.

Businesses must protect themselves against unauthorized overtime

Anyone following the stories related to Wal-Mart's labor disputes in recent years knows that wage and hour disputes can turn into a big problem for companies. Overtime disputes, in particular, are on the rise in Texas and across the country. These lawsuits can be extremely expensive and complicated, and therefore companies should take steps to guard against them.
